Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions. Passage 1. Sleep is very important for the brain. While we are asleep, the brain repairs itself. It also stores information that it learned during the day. If we do not get enough sleep, the brain cannot do these things. We become tired and we cannot remember things so well. Our body's 'immune system', which is its self- defence system, becomes weaker, so we are more likely to get ill. Most people find sleep difficult because they are not relaxed. They do not exercise enough during the day, and in the evening, they are still thinking about their work or studies. In addition, they make phone calls or look at email messages until late at night. They also have too many drinks which contain caffeine, such as coffee, and eat dinner just before they go to bed. All of this is bad for sleeping. So, what can we do? Of course, it is important to be relaxed. However, there are other things we can do to help us get a good night's sleep. First of all, we should make sure that the bed is comfortable, with a good mattress and pillows. The bedroom should be dark and quiet, so that we are not disturbed by light or noise. We should also have the same routine every evening before we go to bed. For example, we should read a book, have a hot bath, or listen to relaxing music. Finally, we should try to go to bed at the same time every night. In this way, we will start to sleep better and feel more active the next day. (Adapted from New Headway Academic Skills by Richard Harrison) Question 1: Which of the following is NOT mentioned in paragraph 1 as a consequence of not getting enough sleep? A. 12. The Amazing Race (TAR) is a popular reality TV show. Elise Doganieri and Bertram van Munster created it in 2001 and since then it has won many awards. In the show, teams travel around the world to different places. They try to arrive first, or at least not come last and they also try to win prizes on their journey. Every year, between 10 and 12 teams play on the show. There are two people in each team and they must know each other before they come on the game. For example, they can be husband and wife, parents and children, friends, etc. They have to travel to different countries and work together on the journey. The teams get some money at the beginning of the race and they use it to buy food, tickets, etc. They can use planes, trains, bikes or even skis to travel. The teams explore places they’ve never been to before and have games or “challenges”. These challenges have some connection to the country they are in and can be things like riding a camel, solving puzzles or eating a lot of food, for example. The teams often have to face extreme weather conditions during their journey. Many times they are outside in the rain or snow or in storms and get cold and wet. It’s all part of the experience, though. Each week, one team leaves the show, and in the end there are only four teams. The first team to get to the last city on the journey wins the game. TAR is a very hard game and the teams become really stressed, but it’s an amazing experience. (Adapted from ) Question 1: Which best serves as the title for the passage? A. That was in Indonesia back in 1987, and my parents were amazed that there were so many people on the planet. However, since then the population has continued to increase. The growth of our human population is extraordinary. For more than two million years, humans lived with no permanent home, finding plants to eat and hunting animals for meat. Then, just 10,000 years ago, we invented agriculture. At that time, there were only about five million humans, but this figure quickly doubled. The population reached a billion in 1805, and since then it has multiplied seven times. The human population has never been bigger, but in some ways the planet seems to be getting smaller. In the past, travellers from Europe to Indonesia spent months at sea. Now you just have to sit on a plane for a few hours. When you arrived in another country a hundred years ago, you saw unfamiliar styles of clothing and architecture and discovered a completely different culture. In many places today, clothing and new buildings are very similar, and people enjoy the same sports, music, films and TV shows. We also buy the same products from huge, global companies. In our different continents, we are starting to live the same lives. Even the languages that we use are becoming more global. There are around seven thousand languages in use today, but the number is decreasing fast. The same thing is happening around the world. Experts think that the number of different languages will halve to just 3,500 by the end of this century. Where will it stop? Will there be a time in the future when Earth's billions all speak just one language, and there are no cultural differences to divide us? Perhaps the planet would be more peaceful if this happened, but I must admit that the idea is quite depressing. I prefer to think that, as our population grows, we can celebrate not the similarity but the fascinating diversity of the human race. Passage 4 In the study of 15 countries, including the US, UK, Japan, India, Brazil, Argentina, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden, it was discovered that 41 percent of "highly mobile" employees (those who more often worked from home) considered themselves highly stressed as well, compared to only 25 percent of those who worked only on-site. This news may come as a shock to many people who may consider a work-from-home lifestyle to be one that's less stressful and marked with more personal freedom. Part of this stress experienced by those highly mobile workers may be due to the fact that those who work from home face a host of challenges that are unique to this particular setup. It is true that most people love the flexibility that comes with working from home: getting up and going to sleep at times that are dictated more by one's personal body clock and tastes can be wonderfully liberating. It can also get out of hand and feel stressful, however, to be free from the structure that once felt confining. Likewise with the freedom from dealing with obnoxious co-workers. While most people may enjoy having the freedom to choose who they interact with each day and love to avoid listening to office gossip, complaints, and politics, they may be surprised by the isolation they feel when their interactions aren't automatic and they need to put in an effort to see anyone at all. Many of these factors may balance each other out stress-wise, but the recent UN study suggests that the increased reliance on mobile devices may push the work-from-home crowd over the edge into higher-stress territory. These experiences may come as a surprise to someone who is new to working at home, but they are commonly experienced. They are also common sources of stress. There must be more on these and other widespread sources of stress for those who live where they work, have zero commute time, and may not realize that they are not alone in the surprising sources of stress they face. (Adapted from Question 1: Which of the followings best serves as the title of the article? A. The Study of Workers in the 15 Countries B. Job and One's Personal Body Clock and Tastes C. On-site work may be more challenging due to its particular setup. B. It’s more stressful to work from home than to work on-site.
